How to use a chalk board to create a small world invitation to encourage play at your house or classroom.
Small world pretend play is one of our favourite ways to play.
Perfect for encouraging creativity and imaginative play in children. It's also the ideal type of play for children of mixed ages, making it a great choice for home or the classroom.
As a teacher, I know it's a fantastic way to build their vocabularies and storytelling abilities whilst learning social cues and turn taking during play.
As both parent and teacher, I also want to encourage my children to see the possibility that lies in most everyday objects.
That why I created this invitation to play using our blackboard.

It's got a lot of use.
Chalk drawings/writings (love chalk for fine motor strengthening compared to using pens on whiteboards), water painting, signs for shops and directions.
We were going to fix it to a wall but being moveable has seen it used a lot of different ways.
Today we put it on top of a table and turned it into a small world to invite play.
The invitation was so simple to set up and your children can certainly help gather all you need to play.
We drew a riverbed with chalk then added some small rocks and cut grass.
Then came the animals...
Then came the animals...
First it was an African savannah before being turned into a scene closer to home along the banks of the River Murray with all the Australian animals coming for a drink.
