Make learning digraphs in class fun with games like these printable BINGO cards that focus on the letter sound /ck/.
My class of five and six year olds love to play games.
While the transition from preschool to school involves many changes and adjustments for both children and their parents, the playful learning need not stop.
Knowing how much my students enjoy playing games during class I've been trying to incorporate more of this type of play in our intentional learning time and in our literacy centres.

At the beginning of school much time is spent exposing children to the initial sounds letters make. Once the most common sounds have been taught, digraphs are introduced otherwise children will struggle to sound out words impeding their reading and writing attempts.
WHAT IS A DIGRAPH?
A digraph is two letters which work together to make a single sound like ch in chin or beach. A digraph can be made up of vowels or consonants or a mix of both. They aren't blends but you can read more about digraphs and how to teach them in this other post. Most consonant digraphs are taught in Reception (first year at school) while the vowel consonants are taught more in Year 1.
Frequent visitors here will know I often make the resources I can not find for use in my classroom. Most recently, we've been looking at the digraph /ck/ in class and I've popped over to Pinterest and checked out Twinkl but haven't found much for the /ck/ blend.
We've learnt the spelling rule that the /ck/ sound is only used after a single vowel which makes its short or first sound but like every new rule taught, students of this age need lots of opportunities to practice and see these words in action.
Knowing how much my class loves games (they still love playing the rhyming word BINGO and our I Spy games), I created these Sound Bingo cards which focus on /ck/ words.
I've also printed out two sets of these to use as a memory games at one of our literacy work stations. These could be used in word sorts with other cards for Daily 5 activities too.
You can grab your own BINGO game for your class!
