And we also love marbles.
Those two came together to see us create our own wooden marble run for play. This DIY project has proved just as popular at home and in the classroom. They are irresistible to both children and adults alike. Just like our handmade mini magnetic blocks, these homemade marble runs were cheap and easy to make from only a few materials.
To make your own wooden marble run you will need -
- long nails (these ones are 3cms long or approx 1 inch if you're outside of Australia)
- a length of scrap timber (these were old recycled floorboards from out of the shed)
- a hammer
- a pencil
Use your pencil to roughly mark out your marble run track.
You need to have each end curve up above the straight runs to stop any wayward marbles from escaping.
After marking out the runs begin hammering in your nails. The nails need to be close enough together so the marble runs over them.
They make such a lovely sound as they strike each nail. Perfect for a calm down spot in your classroom.

At the base, you need to create almost a full circle of nails to catch the marbles at the end of their run.
Don't want to make one? We love these marble runs too!
